My favorite prayer or devotion is definitely the Rosary! It's been such a comfort for as long as I can remember, and is still the prayer I run to today - alongside the Memorare! I actually learned the Memorare because we prayed it right before races in high school cross country, and it's still a favorite.

Today's #catholicmakerconnection prompt is Close Up.

I choose this image because I love the texture of our fair-trade woven goods. The imperfections, the warp and weft threads. The artistry of screenprinting by hand.

It's important to me that when you buy from Annunciation Designs, you support not just my family, but other hard-working families as well. Paying women in Guatemala fair wages means they are able to keep their children in school, to nourish their growing bodies.

I understand why other companies use on-demand printers that send you goods produced for low wages - there are days I think about how much easier that would be.
But I'm passionate about creating opportunity in my own town by training people to screenprint while paying fair wages for the labor throughout the process.

So that's my close up - look closely and maybe you can see all the love and hard work that has gone into these products ❤

#catholicmakerconnection Day 6: Personal Touch

My mind went in a million different directions with this prompt, because when you run every aspect of a small business…there are a lot of personal touches 😂

My hand-lettering is on every design in the shop. But, more than that, a bit of my heart shows in each and every product. Like these bud vases, with a quote that calls out to me, made sustainably in the US, that hold sweet flowers from my little ones.

I grew dahlias for the first time this year. I didn’t realize I needed to stake them, and they all fell over in a heavy rain. But, even with stems snapped at the base, laying in the mulch, they’re blooming. I think there’s a lesson in there somewhere. And that lesson just may lead to a personal touch on the next product 😉

I’m a day behind on #catholicmakerconnection, but I’ve been loving learning about the favorite Saints of others, so I thought I’d jump in. I’ll probably share my workspace in my stories tomorrow (also a day late 😉🙃)
One of my very favorite Saints is St. Augustine. Imagine my delight when we moved and the local parish is under is patronage! There’s something so hopeful about St. Augustine’s story…his wayward youth, his mother’s patience, and then his conversion and his intellectual contributions to our tradition.
I tend to love any saint once I learn their real story 😅, beginning with the first real saint (auto)biography I read, Story of a Soul (St. Therese). I love that we have their examples!
The Chosen has also helped me grow closer to the Apostles, especially Peter and Andrew!

Days 2 & 3 of #catholicmakerconnection

I’m combining these days because I was caring for sick little ones yesterday and didn’t take time to post, but also because the stories intertwine.
Our mission is to help families call to mind the Sacred in the midst of the ordinary. This mission arose out of my own faith journey.
I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools through college. Somehow in all of that, I missed forming a personal relationship with Jesus and a personal call to real holiness. In college, I met my husband, and together we just kind of dove into what it means to follow Jesus. Discussions with his atheist roommate helped us define what we believed. Planning our wedding gave us opportunities to decide what was most important to us. And as our family grew, we realized we wanted as much help as we could get to raise them to know, love, and serve Jesus.
Annunciation Designs is part of my prayer life and part of raising my kids with eyes toward heaven. I want to help your family call to mind the Sacred because I want that for my family too 💕

My shop started 5 years ago, with my first baby on my lap. I designed on a borrowed laptop during my delightful maternity leave + summer. I started with greeting cards because I saw a need for fresh designs - and also because I could start offering them right away without sinking money into prototypes, inventory, etc.
Over time I added screenprinting and collaborations with other artisans to bring my hand-lettered besigns to life, but I didn't foresee all that. I wanted to add beauty to the world, and stay home with my boys (I was heading back to teaching that fall). And now I get to do just that 🥰
